Featured JAH - 7/6/2024, July/Aug 2001

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured JAH! It's fitting that this week's issue is July/Aug 2001, since it's currently July. Let's get going!

On the front cover, The Gypsy King shows off his athleticism. On the back cover, the Spanish Riding School of Vienna gift set makes its debut!

Usually I skip the inside cover and table of contents, but for this issue I didn't for some reason. Probably because it features the QVC Thoroughbred Mare and Nursing Foal set, which I still haven't managed to get my hands on. Maybe I'll find one at Breyerfest this year. I like their rich bay color and the bald face on the mare.

In the Editor's Column, Stephanie talks about Breyerfest and various upcoming releases. On page 3 is a news roundup.

On page 4-5 we have an article about Vanner horses and the owners of such horses as The Gypsy King, Cushti Bok and eventually Kuchi.

On page 6 is a new column by Tom Bainbridge called Artist's Eye, detailing the creation of the first Connoisseur model Mosaic. On page 7 we have some letters to the editor.

After skipping an article about harness racing, a book review and Collector's Corner, on page 14-15 we have an article about the Lusitano breed featuring Breyer portrait model Lavrador (I searched for information about Lavrador but haven't been able to find much information or a date of death (presumably he is deceased by now, but I could be wrong).

After skipping an article about fox hunting, in this week's centerfold we find the handsome Quarterflash, the fourth Connoisseur release! I entered for this guy but wasn't drawn for him. They must have done a separate entry form for this one, because I don't see any pages missing from this issue.

On page 22-23 we have a Breyerfest preview, including sneak peeks of the Collie release, Shadow of Blue and the flocky G2 Rearing Arabian and Scrambling Foal.

After skipping a how-to article, on page 26-27 we have a Breyer scrapbook of photos from various events that took place in 2001.

On page 28-29 we have an article about CH Sky Watch, who inexplicably never got his own Breyer model (possibly because the Five Gaiter had been used for CH Imperator's portrait and Breyer didn't have another suitable Saddlebred mold at the time). Maybe someday he'll get a portrait on Hamilton.

After skipping Horse Trader (down to two pages plus the abbreviations legend), on page 35 we have a news update on David O'Connor and a retirement blurb for Biko. I cropped out page 34 because it was the conclusion to the how-to article.

On page 39 we have this week's Vintage Point, featuring the Cantering Welsh Pony, which was already 30 years old by 2001. That makes her over 50 years old now! Wow. Anyway, I cropped out page 38 because it was the conclusion to the fox hunting article (I figure there are plenty of other places on the Internet to learn about fox hunting).

On page 40 is the rest of the Vintage Point article, and that brings us to the end of this week's issue! Check back...uh...maybe not next week for Sept/Oct 2001. Breyerfest week approaches and I don't know if I'll have time to write another Featured JAH for next week! Stay tuned.
