More dumb names

Well, I was right - those sneak peeks were of the Best Customs Contest prizes. Not that it was really that hard to guess. Anyway, here's Look What You Made Me Do (trying not to cringe while typing all that out).

Well, Kalahkaari in chestnut certainly is pretty! At least I don't have to be too disappointed about this one, since I decided to sell off my Marwari models.

And here's I Forgot That You Existed (ugh)!

Now this one does hurt. I still haven't managed to get my hands on a Roo, and now they come out with this guy! He's a similar color to Fiero from a few years ago, which is interesting because last year's Willamette also had a far more common doppelganger in the mini Nazruddin.  Well, good luck to everyone entering the BCC!

Just when I thought it was safe to sell off my Marwari models...

Greetings, readers! It's been a little bit of a news drought around here lately, but the latest Breyer web special was revealed today - behold Mumbai!

Gah! This guy was teased in last month's Collector Club newsletter, but I wasn't expecting it to be a Marwari! Now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't decided to sell all of mine off. Kalahkaari is the only one I've managed to sell so far, but still!

Oh well - money is a little tighter than it used to be these days, so any chance to avoid purchasing something is welcomed. Good luck to everyone entering!

Also, BreyerWest is this weekend (if everyone can struggle through the snow to get to Denver), so theoretically we'll be seeing some great reveals this weekend, including the reveal of the mold and/or colorways for this year's Breyer Ambassador/Volunteer model! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for that!

Official reveal of Kit, and new arrivals!

More exciting news today, everyone - we have an official reveal of Kit, the final release in this year's Stablemates Club!

Very nice, though I don't really think the mold resembles a Haflinger very much - looks more like some kind of draft to me. I kinda want to see one next to another Stablemates mold to see how they compare, size-wise. I do like him though, especially his head and neck. Can't wait for him to be released! Looks like Breyer hopes to release him in early December, along with the bonus Stablemate for this year (Helios), so their shipping must have gotten back on track - at least, for the Stablemates Club. I guess we'll see if that happens or not.

In other exciting news, I had an exciting pony arrival day today! First up, my Deluxe Stablemates Club model, Ellington:

What a handsome boy.

Very few flaws to speak of too, which was nice. He does have a spot on his belly that looks...overly red, for lack of a better description:

But he's still a pretty nice model, and I was happy to see he came in the satin bag again like usual. I wish the Stablemates Club would go back to those, honestly.

Next, my Kalahari arrived today as well!

Certainly a striking paint job!

He leaves a bit to be desired in the quality department, however:

He's got something weird going on with the paint on his butt just above the flipped part of the tail, and the tail itself is a little weird where it attaches to the model.

His left front hoof seems oddly sunken all the way around, and since my other Marwari models are in storage, I can't compare models to see if they're all like that. I feel like I would have noticed it if they were? But maybe not.

He's also got some eye-colored paint underneath his eye and numerous small flaws in other places, but honestly...I've seen worse ones on Facebook, including one where the tail wasn't even attached to the hindquarters, so I guess I'll just put this one in storage with the others and be done with it.

I also got my second Atli today and it was another chestnut, which is looking like the least desirable color (and hardest to trade), so the less said about that, the better.

So it was a pretty good mail day overall - let's hope we get some more fun reveals tomorrow!

Kalahari selections are out and Delray is revealed!

Good news, readers - selections for Kalahari have been sent out, and I was drawn for one! This is the first web special I've been drawn for this year (though I've only entered for two others)!

Can't wait to see what he looks like in person! And congratulations to all the other winners out there!

In other news, we also know what the Delray Stablemate for the upcoming Ponies & Palm Trees event looks like!

Evidently it was revealed to event attendees last week, as I saw a few listed for presale with this image. Sucks that it's a Cantering Warmblood - the prices are still pretty insane even for models included with the tickets, so I doubt I'll be able to add one to my collection anytime soon. Oh well.

Hard to believe Ponies & Palm Trees is happening this week - I hope we get some fun reveals soon!

Kalahari is revealed!

Behold, readers - the latest wild animal web special is here! Say hello to African painted dog Kalahari!

What a handsome boy! Gotta add him to my collection. Fortunately, my chances of doing that are higher than ever before, since they increased the quantity to 750. Funny, I can remember the days (not that long ago) when collectors turned up their noses at runs of 350 for being too many! How the turntables...or something. I just realized that the first release of this mold was named Kalahkaari - say those two names three times fast! Or try to. Anyway, good luck to everyone entering!

Featured Model - 7/11/2021, Glossy Bay Test Marwari

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...the Glossy Bay Test Marwari!

This model was a Breyerfest live auction model back in the before times, when Breyerfest was still held in person. He was a OOAK on the Marwari mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl. His sale price was nothing to sneeze at, either - $6700. Ouch!

His paint job is so lush, I love it. There's a lot of depth to it and the gloss just makes it pop. He's beautiful! No wonder somebody spent that much money on it. The little bit of white on his face really sets off the paint job, too. Another one to make a person wish there was a money tree in their backyard.

As for the Marwari, he's getting another Breyerfest release this year, so it's good that he's getting some more love. But where else might we see him? I wouldn't mind if he showed up as a web special - maybe as a gazelle or something? He kind of has that look, I think. He's also prancy enough to make a good Holiday Horse - maybe next year? He's had a ton of auction models, so maybe they'll give him a rest in that area for a while. Hopefully we get a new release on him soon!

Two reveals today!

Exciting news today - we got two reveals! Yesterday doesn't really count since we didn't actually see the 7 Arts Surprise (resisting the urge to type 7 Rings Surprise). Anyway, meet Tassili

From the blog:

Tassili n’Ajjer is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park located in the Sahara Desert in Southern Algeria.  This massive site is home to sandstone rock formations engraved with over 15,000 images, including cattle, antelope, and people, that date to the Neolithic period – about 12,000 years ago.

Our Tassili model for BreyerFest pays homage to this amazing historical site that is a window into the past of humans and art.  He has been done as a bright, coppery chestnut tobiano pinto with a glossy finish, which reminds us of the color of sandstone. Originally sculpted by Brigitte Eberl, the Marwari (mold #722) was first released in 2012 as a Premier Club model, but has more recently been our 2017 Celebration Horse, Nazruddin.

I love this guy! His chestnut color really does look coppery. And I love that he's glossy! I'll be excited to add him to my herd. However, he's a bit overshadowed by the other reveal....

AAAAAAAHHHHHH THIS IS EVERYTHING I WANT IN A BREYER MODEL! NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY BE BETTER THAN THIS - I WANT IT ON EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME! I MAY BUY TWO OF THEM, NOT JOKING!

Okay, anyway. Done hyperventilating now. The only way this model could possibly be better is if it also had color-shift paint and, like, glitter all over it or something. He's totally a Lisa Frank horse in 3D and I love it so much. Not that I had a lot of Lisa Frank stuff as a kid or anything...But I digress. His name is Pollock and holy crap, I have a new inspiration for that far-off day in the maybe future where I win the design your own Breyer at the silent auction. I want this color on everything! Here's his other side for good measure:

MUST. HAVE. Holy crap.

Fortunately, they're making 1600 of them, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of one. Which is good, because this guy has to come to my house!

Featured Model - 12/12/2020, Glossy Chalky White Marwari

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...the glossy chalky white Marwari from the Breyerfest 2017 silent auction!

This handsome model was a OOAK on the Marwari mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl. As mentioned above, he was part of the Breyerfest 2017 silent auction and came with a costume made by Didi Hornberger (I think).

Sigh...there's just something about a white horse, isn't there? Plus he's glossy to boot! Another model to die for. The Marwari just looks so good in white! He looks a tad bit pearly, too - that makes his paint job a little more interesting than just plain white.

As for the Marwari, I feel like he's a slightly neglected mold - he's had a number of auction appearances, but only one regular run and a small handful of special runs. Give us a new Marwari! I suppose the slightly-older, slightly-less-popular molds like him tend to slip under the radar when the new hotness comes out. Maybe next year he'll get a web special or something - though I don't think the Khalid release was terribly popular, so that doesn't bode well for new releases in the future. I can still hope, though!

Featured Model - 1/4/2020, Haute Couture

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model from my collection, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it! This week's model is...Haute Couture!

This handsome guy was one of the special run line items at Breyerfest 2015. He was item #711222 and was a run of 1200 on the Marwari mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl.

Haute Couture was the hot model of Breyerfest 2015! Everyone had to get their hands on him...which is odd, since the mold isn't super-popular. But he did have a new hairdo for this release, so that probably had something to do with it. Incidentally, the new 'do wasn't seen again until last year's Khalid special run. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the mane and forelock...but the swishing tail is fun. As for his color, black leopard is always eye-catching, and this guy is no exception. I don't really have anything to complain about with this guy - he even has mottling on his muzzle!

Too bad we don't see the Marwari mold used more often - I feel like he's been overshadowed by more recent releases, which I guess is a risk you take when you suddenly start releasing 3-4 new molds every year for the foreseeable future. We did get the aforementioned Khalid, and in May we'll get some glossy Khalids - I hope I get one! No real predictions about where else we'll see him, with or without his curly ears - maybe he'll be a web special? I don't see him popping up at Breyerfest, but I suppose it's always possible. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to find out!

Khalid, Lightning Ridge and the Seafoams are here!

Good news, everyone! My Khalid, Lightning Ridge and Seafoam set have all arrived! Behold their awesome beauty! I'll start with the Seafoams.

I like Seafoam's shade of blue, but I think I would have liked him better if he'd been painted more like Dazzle, with the mostly silver/white butt fading into the blue color on the rest of his body. I mean, he's kind of painted like that now, but I'd have preferred the silver to be confined to his hindquarters.

Also, I think we can all agree that the paint jobs on the Stablemates are definitely not worth $25, but I think the bulk of the cost of these sets is most likely going toward the creation of the new Mini Whinny molds. Maybe next year they'll use old molds and do some slightly more complicated paint jobs? I hope so. How long can/will they keep introducing new Mini Whinnies? Maybe this will be the only year of the club.

Next, here's Lightning Ridge!

He's definitely one of the more interesting models I've seen in the last few years, though he's not a terribly good representation of an opal. Unfortunately, giving a model the same inner "fire" an opal has would probably make the model prohibitively expensive to produce, but this guy is a nice facsimile.

It's good to see Breyer getting into the precious stones inspiration for paint jobs, though. It seemed like that theme had pretty much been left for Stone to work on, for obvious reasons, but why concede that market to your competitor? I'd love to see pretty much all of them get used again, so far.

Lastly, here's Khalid!

Sorry for the terrible photo. I love his shade of...dun? I'm not actually sure what color that's supposed to be. He has primitive marks, so I'm going with dun.

I do like the alternate tail for this model, but I'm not as much of a fan of the mane and forelock. I guess the ears (or lack of Marwari ears) doesn't bother me too much, though. And I love this guy's belly spots!

Quality-wise, the Seafoams and Lightning Ridge were fine, but check out this gnarly seam split on Khalid:

I didn't even notice it until I was taking photos for the blog, but now it's all I can look at. Not sure it would be worth the hassle of replacing him, though. I guess I'll just have to try not to look at his face/

That's all I've got for today - stay tuned for more exciting Breyer news!

Fall Releases are out!

Good news, everyone! Breyer's fall releases were announced today! I'll start with this year's brick-and-mortar special run, Khalid:

A new Marwari? With the non-Marwari ears? Sign me up! I have to admit, I like the Marwari version better (especially with his original hair), but this guy looks nice. I'll be excited to see what that belly spot looks like in person!

Next, the Fall Limited Edition:

He's limited to 3000 pieces, and he's definitely interesting! His color is based on black opal. I love opals, so of course I had to order this one. I hope he's as striking as a real black opal, although I don't know what types of paint Breyer would have to use to get the opal effect. I'm guessing he'll be translucent, as well.

Next, a new Classic horse-and-book set:

The Pie, on the Classics Amelia mold! She looks nice, although I don't collect Amelia. Black-and-white pinto is always so striking!

Lastly, we have a couple of Classics unicorn foals!

Say hello to Zoe and Zander! They're cute, but nothing I need to collect. But hey, new unicorns! I'm not going to complain about that.

That's all I have for today! I hope Khalid and Lightning Ridge get here fast!

Finally, some auction models!

With Breyerfest barely more than three weeks away, I've been wondering when Breyer was going to show us some auction models. Well, now I don't have to wonder anymore - the first four were posted on the Breyerfest Blog yesterday! Here's the first, on Emerson:

That's a really nice color on him, and I love the mapping! The description says he's chalky, but I don't see it, myself. Maybe on closeup inspection? I like the model, and I want to like Emerson, but that angle isn't doing anything for me. Maybe my Emerson will be for sale at Breyerfest after all...

Well, anyway, on to the next model!

The blog describes this Bobby Jo as a "Flaxen Liver Chestnut Roan." Kind of an odd-looking color, but I could get behind it on some other molds. Bristol, perhaps? Or Brishen? Or Ashquar? Ooh, that would be really nice.

The blog says this is a test for last year's Dark Horse Surprise set, but it looks more like a test for the raffle model Jackpot if you ask me. He's even glossy! Sadly, I like this color better on this Smarty Jones than I did on Bristol for some reason.

This Marwari is definitely my favorite of the four. That glossy dark bay is to die for! I wonder what outrageous price he'll sell for at the auction. Marwari auction models tend to sell on the low end of the spectrum, but I suspect that might not be the case this year.

Featured Model - 2/23/2019, Rajah

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model from my collection, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it! This week's model is...Rajah!

Rajah was a Collector Club special run for the first part of 2014. He's item #712114 and was produced on the Marwari mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl. While I don't think we ever got production numbers for him, these types of special runs tend to number around 1,000, so that's what I would assume his production size to have been.

Whew! I guess it's been a while since I took a look at this model - he's a bit small anyway, and I have so many other models that this mold tends to disappear on the shelves. This color looks smashing on him, though! He has great shading, and while Breyer's dapples tend to leave something to be desired, his aren't too bad. And I love the snip on his nose! He's definitely a pretty guy.

As for the mold itself, it's gotten a bit of a rest in recent years - it was originally introduced in the 2012 Premier Club, and has since been a  regular run, a Breyerfest live show prize, a Breyerfest special run, the Breyerfest Celebration Model in matte and glossy (I'm sensing a pattern here), and several Breyerfest auction models. Where will he pop up next? I'm wondering if Breyer would use him (or his modified counterpart, to fit the America the Beautiful theme) this year. He isn't the most popular mold of all time, so who knows if they'd actually do it. But I wouldn't complain if they did!

I doubt we'll see him at Breyerfest this year unless he's the surprise model, but that doesn't seem likely to me. That reminds me - I need to do a Breyerfest predictions post for this year. Hopefully I'll find some spare time later this weekend!

More auction models!

It's Monday, which means we get to see more auction models on the blog! Check them out!

Lot 10 is...another hidden lot. Grr. Oh well, on to the next one...

Lot 11 is the Live Show Reserve Prize, Hot to Trot. I didn't notice this right away, but someone pointed it out on Facebook: This model is pacing. Why did they name a pacer Hot to Trot? Blegh. Anyway, we've seen him before, so I don't have much else to say about him.

Lot 12 is a "Glossy Dapple Blood Bay" Cigar with a custom tail (the loose Show Jumping Warmblood tail, to be exact). This model was visible in the background of a recent Breyer "Monday Minute" video on YouTube, which led to speculation that he was this year's volunteer model. Unfortunately, these types of modifications on molds not normally built for having their manes and tails exchanged are almost never used for any kind of wide release - the only one I remember was the Lonesome Glory Thrillseeker with the modified tail, seen as the last Connoisseur release in 2011 - and that was a simple tail bend. While this guy's color is yummy, I'm not sure I like that tail on him anyway, and I think he needs to be redder - he looks a lot like the original Cigar release as is.

Lot 13 is a red dun splash pinto on the Valegro mold. I've seen mixed reactions to this model online, and I have to agree - he doesn't look quite right, although I like his bald face. Red dun has never been one of my favorite colors, though, so I might be biased.

The last lot for today is a, "5th Century B.C. Amphora-inspired Decorator on the Marwari mold." I saw a little bit of speculation online that this guy could be a clue for the theme of next year's Breyerfest (Horses in Ancient History, or similar) but...ehh. Lauren Hoeffer posted a photo of an old custom very similar to this on Blab this afternoon, and since she's done work for Breyer before, it's entirely possible this model was inspired by that custom.

Sadly, that's all the auction models we get to see today. Hopefully they step up the pace of releasing these things - there's only 2 more Mondays (!) until Breyerfest, and at a rate of 4 (or 5, counting hidden lots) release every week out of a total of 28 lots, they'll only be up to 24 lots by 7/9. Hmm, maybe they'll release an extra one somewhere and then do a mini-countdown of the remainder during Breyerfest week? That could be exciting! I hope they do.

New Arrivals: Nazruddin, Repeat the Beat and Volunteer Model

I'm almost done taking quick cell phone photos of my Breyerfest 2017 models! Huzzah! More photos of things from the event, like the sneak peeks in the Collector Club tent, will have to wait until I've dug out my camera card. I've been extremely busy with work since we got back, and that's not going to change anytime soon, so it might be a while until that happens...oh well. Let's take a look at one of my Nazruddins!

Unfortunately, all I've been hearing online (and seeing, amongst all of my Nazruddins) is that somebody at Breyer really screwed the pooch with these models.  I'm not usually one to complain about poor quality models, but I got 8 Nazruddins and all of them have nasty flaws. These models are the model equivalent of Scrubs' HFFA.

Now, don't get me wrong - this color is really nice, and and it looks really good on the Marwari. They also looked good being carried around by all the little kids at the Horse Park all weekend - like they belonged there, unlike something like Simba or last year's squashed-looking Imperador. But then you look at it up close and see things like this:

What even is that? Did they paint the area underneath the mane the mane color before they actually attached the manes? Did they try to mask the mane off? The edges look too sharp to be overspray, but I'm not an airbrush expert. And all eight of my Nazruddins look like that to varying degree. I have all of the previous releases on this mold and none of them look remotely like that.

This particular guy's paint job isn't that horrible other than the mane thing, but another thing I noticed was that of a total of eight Nazruddin models, five of them have visible seam lines on their faces. It's not guaranteed that these will turn into seam splits, but it's not good all the same. I've never seen so many models in the same run with seam issues before, and now five at once? Sheesh. And the three that don't have the seam lines have other issues (warped legs, paint booboos, etc) that are making me lean toward keeping one of the others despite the seam issues. I still haven't even decided which one I'm going to keep yet because every time I start looking at them, I see more issues! Bleh. You'd think of all the recent celebration models to slack off on, they'd have done it with Gooitzen, since all they were doing with those was spraying them flat black and then glossing them afterward. These paint jobs at least took a little effort!

Well, enough of that. Let's move on to Repeat the Beat!

In contrast to the Nazruddin fiasco, I couldn't find a single flaw on my Repeat the Beat (after I spent a few minutes in the Breyer Store first looking for one that had decently-painted horseshoes and no other visible flaws). So, another Bluegrass Bandit joins my nearly-complete conga!

I really like the color on this model - this style of painting roans is very appealing to me for some reason (although if I was really going to nitpick I'd say the real Pete isn't quite as roany).

I really liked the brownish undertones on this model, though it was hard to get them to show up in the picture. He's a handsome guy!

Lastly, let's take a look at this year's volunteer model, who doesn't seem to have a name:

There was a fair bit of controversy around this model due to her weird blood mark. I'll admit it is a little oddly-placed, but it doesn't really bother me - I'm just glad I was able to get one, despite not volunteering.

I was very fortunate to be able to trade one of my glossy Bollywood Surprise models for her - I guess the surprise being on a model I don't collect is a good thing after all! Word on the street is that these models were painted in New Jersey, as has been the trend for volunteer models the last few years, and like Repeat the Beat, I couldn't find a single flaw on her (other than her bloodshot pink eyewhites, but that's just personal preference).

Look at her pretty face! I actually think the blood mark sets off her color very nicely - her other side is sorta boring without the blood mark. She's a worthy addition to the herd! Hopefully we find out her name and the quantity produced at some point.

That's all I have for tonight - I'll try to get to photographing the Breyerfest 2017 Stablemates I got, but once again, no promises!

Breyerfest Blog Updates

As of last week, the Breyerfest Blog on Breyer's website has begun posting new things related to this year's Breyerfest Gateway to India. I couldn't help but notice they posted some new information about Sokkar, the Early Bird raffle model.

Sokkar is a shaded black, minimal Splash Pinto on Kathleen Moody's Icelandic mold, number 729. His super high gloss finish is set off with four stockings, a big blaze, and two mesmerizing blue eyes.

I had been thinking Sokkar's paint job actually reminded me a lot of Fox Valley Oliver's, especially the glossy prize FVO (although, on further inspection, Sokkar has more white on his feet than FVO). But if Sokkar is a splash pinto, could he have some white markings on his other side? It would be interesting if we could see a photo of his other side (cough, cough).

In other news, today's post gives some history about Marwari horses and Nazruddin, the Celebration Horse. His owner, Francesca Kelly, donated three horses to the Kentucky Horse Park, which can be seen at the Breeds Barn; here's my (bad) photo of one of them from a few years back.

Wow, I forgot that was from 2012. Here's the same horse in its stall later.

We'll have to swing by the Breed Barn this year and say hello - we've missed the Parade of Breeds the last few years we've been there.

Anyway, now that the blog is being updated, hopefully they start showing us some of this year's releases. Maybe this week? One can only dream.
