Featured Model - 10/30/2021, Skullduggery

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...Skullduggery!

This spooky guy was item #711001 and a run of 4,000 produced on the Silver mold sculpted by Kathleen Moody. He was Breyer's first Halloween Horse!

His skull blanket is pretty ingenious, I think, though he kinda makes think of pirates rather than Halloween. I was still in high school when this model was released, and most likely didn't have a dealer in the vicinity that would have had one. Since then the price has always been more than I wanted to pay, so I still don't have one of these guys in my collection. Maybe someday!

Silver himself is a pretty popular mold and has been done in a lot of different colors, but there are a still a few left - palomino, solid chestnut, realistic red roan, solid dapple gray - so maybe he'll get a new release soon. He's had a LOT of releases over the last 20 years, though (geez, when did that happen?), and he's spent a lot of time on the sidelines over the past few years because of it, so it's anyone's guess when we'll see a new one. Whatever his next release is, I'm sure it'll be something I have to have.

Happy Halloween, everybody!

Collector Club October newsletter and JAH!

Well, it's not QUITE the end of the month yet, but it's the last business day of the month, and you know what that means...time for the Collector Club newsletter! I'll stop poking at them for leaving things like this for the end of the month when they stop dragging out every possible reveal for as long as they can...But anyway! If you're a CC member, check your email for details. There's an article about Breyer at Equitana, and an exciting giveaway!

That's right - somehow they had an extra Luna around the offices, so they're giving her away to one lucky winner. This was a web special on Ruffian back in 2012 and a run of 350. I jokingly called her Three Wolf Moon at the time, though I don't know if the resemblance was intentional or not. She was designed by Sommer Prosser if I remember right.  Another funny story about this one - I was drawn to purchase her, and Breyer accidentally sent me two of them, so I actually got to handpick the one I wanted before sending the other one back. Which was good, because one of them had pretty much perfect decals, and the other...not so much. So I was happy to have two to pick from! A lot of these models had issues with the decals, probably because they're just so big.

Anyway, I won't be entering for this one, but good luck to everyone who does!

The newsletter also has this sneak peek!

Something glossy and blue - I wonder what it could be? They certainly seem to be on a blue kick the last few years. I'm guessing this is the last web special of the year, which is usually a silver filigree or something vaguely-holiday-related, but I don't know what mold it is. At this point I'm just hoping it's something I don't want! That's all I have for now, so I hope everyone has a happy Halloween!

Edit: I forgot the part where I was going to talk about the annual JAH being shipped out. I got an email yesterday that they were shipping! Here's the cover:

I hope my copy gets here fast!

Diadem and Alcor!

Attention, readers! The Susecion and Le Fire set that was teased last month has finally appeared on the website! Behold:

From the website:

The magic of a new life takes on a double meaning when it’s a unicorn foal. Diadem has just welcomed her new colt, Alcor, whose inky black coat with gold, purple, and blue under-shading will help him to stay hidden while he’s young. Diadem has a lovely white coat with soft blue, purple, and pink shading. Both of these mystical beauties have golden horns and hooves.

Nice! I was afraid I would miss out on these two, but since they're still in stock now, several hours after going up, they must have made a healthy supply this time. This is a pretty popular set of molds, though, so I'd suggest buying yours ASAP before they disappear. They qualify for free shipping, too, which is nice.

I'm a little ambivalent about the mare's color, honestly, so I'm hoping she looks better in person. Can't wait to see what they look like in hand!

2022 Celebration Horse has been revealed!

Excellent news, everyone! We have a reveal of the 2022 Breyerfest Celebration Horse - say hello to Nikolas!

And, say hello to his model, on a BRAND NEW MOLD!

Nikolas is a German Riding Pony, and his mold is, yes, a brand-new mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl!

I wish we had some other angles of the new mold, personally - I hate the three-quarter angle they keep using to show off new molds. My first impressions are...not really that favorable...as he looks a lot like Idocus and has the same hairstyle, which I'm not a fan of. But I'll wait until we see more photos (and/or I get him in hand) to decide if he stays. Maybe if they give him a different hairstyle later?

Anyway, can't wait to see more information about Breyerfest 2022!

Solar Flare is here, and 2021 Retired List!

Good news, everyone! Solar Flare is here!

What a beauty! He certainly lives up to his name.

Let's hope they find more fun ways to use this mold in the future! He's too floofy and flouncy not to. Breyerfest special run next year, maybe?

Quality-wise, he was pretty nice - I didn't find anything wrong with him. Maybe things are looking up in the quality department? (What I wouldn't give to work in their quality department...)

Not a lot of big surprises here, nor is there really a lot being retired (other than Collecta stuff). Since things have been so delayed getting here over the last few months, I wonder if they figure they don't need to retire things since the warehouse is basically empty anyways? Odd that Old Glory, Steele and Thriller are on the list, since. you know...we knew they were limited...But anyway. Better get your hands on that stuff quick before they disappear!

Featured Model - 10/23/2021, Licorice

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I dodge the nuclear fallout pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and rename my dog Dogmeat provide commentary about it. This week's model is...Licorice!

This model was a run of 12  and was item #712304, produced on the Zebra mold sculpted by Kristina Lucas Francis. She was the micro run hidden within the Christmas Candy zebras from 2019. IDYB has this one's name listed as Coal, but I could have sworn it was Licorice? Confusing.

Although a black zebra is a little strange-looking (though you might be able to call it melanistic if you squint hard enough), I still really hoped I'd get one for the collection. Alas, it wasn't to be, but maybe I'll find one for sale someday. It's hard to go wrong with glossy black, really - though it does make them hard to photograph.

We haven't had a new release on the Zebra mold since the Christmas one in 2019, but I'd really like to see another one - the mold has never had a lot of releases, and I'm sure Breyer's mass-zebra-painting techniques have improved since 2004. The Grevy's Zebra auction model from 2018 might provide a hint as to what a new regular run would look like, though I think a quagga would be pretty cool. Maybe we could get some kind of extinct animal series? Food for thought...though it might be a bit depressing.

Breyerfest 2022 update!

Not much to report on today, but there is an update about Breyerfest 2022: Prost on the Breyerfest blog! From the blog:

Be sure to follow along on the BreyerFest Blog in the coming weeks and months as we dive into what inspired us so much about Germany and reveal everything BreyerFest: Prost! has to offer guests.  In addition to information outlining how the hybrid experience will work, we’ve also got tons of reveals – workshops, contests, seminars, guest horses, and so MANY models!

In addition, the first reveal for Prost will happen later this month! Exciting! I'm guessing this is the Celebration Horse. Pretty high chance that we'll get a draft horse as the Celebration Horse - maybe on Shannondell? I wouldn't say no to Georg either, since I'd actually keep that one. Fortunately we're almost at the end of the month already, so we don't have too much longer to wait! It'll be nice to get some details about how the "hybrid" Breyerfest will work, too.

Now all we need is some milk!

Attention, collectors: there's a new Pony for Christmas release on Breyer's website! His name is Gingerbread; check him out!

I couldn't order this one fast enough. A new Bouncer, and what looks like a nice coppery chestnut to boot? My only nitpick is that I wish there was a photo without the blanket. Though he can definitely pull off the ugly-Christmas-sweater look! Can't wait to see this one in person!

Also, more TSC models are showing up in stores, and it looks like there are new Mystery Foal Surprise sets out there. The photos I've seen showed a dark blue Greyson, gold/palomino Croi, some type of G2 Morgan, a Prince Charming, a green G3 Prancing Arabian, blue pinto Magnolia, and one of the foals is the new draft foal in lime green. Definitely going to have to pick up those sets if our local TSC stores ever get them in stock!

Spooky Surprise sweepstakes!

Heads up, everybody! Breyer is giving away 18 of the latest Spooky Stablemates blind bags!

18 lucky winners will receive one of these bad boys. I already got the one I wanted, so I'm not going to enter, but if you're still looking, this might be your chance! Good luck to everyone entering!

Looking to the Future: 2022 Vintage Club

Huh...I guess I kinda forgot about writing this year's Vintage Club speculation post - until now. Oh well - better late than never. Much of this post will be cribbed from previous posts on the subject, just as an FYI. Despite my dubious prediction ability, I will once again attempt to predict what molds we'll see in the 2022 Vintage Club. Well, let's get this show on the road!

This photo is so old, it's probably not worth bothering with anymore, but I'll put it up just the same:

So far, club members have seen the following models from the photo above:

Amigo, the charcoal Adios;
Halo, the Appaloosa-Performance-Horse-colorway on the Stretch Morgan;
Commander, the smoke Five Gaiter;
Denim (Diamonds?), the Copenhagen pinto Shetland Pony;
and Kiowa, the Indian Pony pinto on the Jumping Horse mold.
Also, the glossy palomino Semi-Rearing Mustang was one of the losers in the vote that gave us Tanner.

Molds that appear in the photo, but were used in the VC in other colors, include the Running Stallion, Man o' War, Quarter Horse Gelding, the Belgian (twice), Semi-Rearing Mustang, Fighting Stallion (twice), Running Foal (with Mare), the Western Prancing Horse, the Grazing Mare (with Foal), the Western Horse and the Thoroughbred Mare and Foal.

So really, all of those molds have been used by now, with the exception of the Longhorn Bull, and I doubt he'll ever show up - but you never know.

These are the vintage Breyer molds that haven't been used in the club yet. I removed the Appaloosa Performance Horse and Smoky as they're being used or presumably being used in 2022:

Black Beauty, the Black Stallion, Bolya/Halla,  Buckshot, the Donkey, El Pastor, the FAM and FAF, the Fury Prancer, Galiceno, Haflinger, the Hanoverian, Justin Morgan, the Lying Down Foal, Midnight Sun, Morganglanz, Phantom Wings, Phar Lap, the POA, possibly the PAF, Quarter Horse Yearling, the Race Horse, Saddlebred Weanling, the Scratching Foal, Sea Star, the Stock Horse Stallion, Mare and Foal, Stud Spider, the Trakehner and the Western Pony.

So, with the APH and Smoky already in the lineup, that leaves one vintage mold and probably one modern mold with a vintage paint job, plus the optional model. The remaining vintage mold is probably the gambler's choice release, so I think I'm going to go with Justin Morgan in an array of vintage colors and Vermeer (Noooooo!) as the optional model.

Lastly, there's the Stablemate. They seem to be more-or-less alternating between old and new molds with those, so my guess is the G1 Morgan Mare.

Hopefully we only have to wait a few more weeks to find out if I'm at least in the ballpark with these guesses! I really should have written this earlier...

2022 Stablemates Club!

Well, the 2022 edition of the Stablemates Club is now open for joining! Check out the first release, Dax:

From the email:

Our first release of 2022 will be Dax, a charming appaloosa! Dax is created on the mini version of Breyer’s iconic Fighting Stallion model, who just celebrated his 60th birthday in 2021. Dax’s chestnut appaloosa coat is loaded with tiny details, and also has a subtle interference purple finish for a little extra sparkle.

The interference purple will be interesting, but I'm not a Fighting Stallion (or mini FS) fan, so this one won't be heading my way. However, I think I'll wait a little while before I renew, to "encourage" Breyer to show us more of the releases. I hope Dax is also the matte/glossy option so I don't have to bother with that, either. The blurb on the website indicates the packaging is being redesigned again - but it still says they'll come in a box. I'd prefer they bring back the satin bags, honestly.

Anyway, let's hope they show us more soon! Hey, shouldn't the yearly JAH be out soon? Let's hope that has a lot of fun reveals as well!

Featured Model - 10/16/2021, Live Auction Yasmin

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...the 2017 Breyerfest Live Auction Yasmin!

This model, as stated above, was one of the live auction models for Breyerfest 2017. She was a OOAK on the Yasmin/Shagya Arab mold sculpted by Brigitte Eberl.

This model is amazing, but the star-dappled models always are. This is what the Premier Club Duende was supposed to look like - unfortunately, this style of paint job is difficult to mass-produce - due to the nature of manufacturing, it's never going to come out as nicely as a model like this, where I imagine whoever painted it was given all the time they needed to finish her. She's stunning! One wonders what she'd look like glossed...but I digress. I like her one white sock and the contrast of her light-colored tail against the mostly-dark rest of her body. She sold for $3,800 - too expensive then, but practically a bargain now. Although I didn't attend the auction that year anyway due to being pregnant at the time. But I digress again.

Yasmin is another one of those molds that could use a little more love. Her non-decorator RR appearance only lasted a couple of years, and her unicorn iteration only lasted one year. She was a Breyerfest special run in 2017, a Breyerfest prize model in 2019, and a Vintage Club special run last year, so she's had at least one release every year since her debut, but it still feels like we're a little light on releases for her. Maybe she'll get a web special? I imagine she'll be a TSC special run at some point, since she isn't terribly Araby and might be able to pass for something Western-ish. I'm going to hope for a web special - as long as I can get drawn for it, anyway.

Edit: Derp, I forgot about this year’s Omega Fahim release. I have him in my collection, so there’s really no excuse...but anyways. Let’s see a web special release anyhow!

2022 Premier Club is open for signups!

Exciting news, everyone! The 2022 Premier Club is open for signups! Check out the first release for 2022!

Say hello to Zafirah! She's a "stunning show stance Arabian" sculpted by Brigitte Eberl. I, uh...hate to say it, but this sculpt isn't really stunning me. I think I need to see her from a few more angles, because this one is kind of awkward. The color is fine, but she looks a little odd, and commenters on Blab have noted she lacks detail on her face and ears. I'll still join the club like I always do, but I need to see more of this one before I decide whether to keep her or not.

I'm also wondering who the other two sculptors are for next year, since they didn't see fit to announce them like they usually do. Come on, Breyer, it's hard enough joining the club when we don't get to see all the releases beforehand; you could at least tell us the other two sculptors. Though I may be the only person hoping for a new Moody? She hasn't had one for a while...but anyways. Maybe they'll tell us later on to drive signups. Anyway, I hope we get some more angles of Zafirah soon!

2022 Vintage Club and second chance sale drawing!

Well, the 2022 Vintage Club opened up for general membership...and I'm pretty sure the remaining entries sold out in less than an hour, so I hope those of you out there that wanted to join were able to. I didn't join, as I'm not enough of a vintage fan, but I hope we get some fun releases next year!

In other news, the selections for the second Breyerfest second-chance sale have gone out. I wasn't drawn for that either, but...I don't really need to buy any more Breyerfest stuff. For those of you that were drawn, good luck tomorrow!

More new reveals!

Good news, everyone! We now have photos of Dusk and Dawn, this year's optional Vintage Club set! Check them out!

If you're a member of this year's Vintage Club, check your email for more information. VC members will (or should) be able to combine shipping with Nugget, the decorator Brighty release, so that's good! Marabella and Amber look pretty good in gloss, though I have to admit they look a little lost without Ashley there as well. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that foal, but I may have to undertake a significant herd reduction in the coming year and unfortunately my Ambers (and Ashleys) would be on the liquidation list for said reduction, so I'll hold off on trying to get one for now. That charcoal color is really nice, though! I prefer the darker-black charcoal models to the more chocolate-brown ones.

In other exciting news, we have another new release on poor Malik! It seems like he's been a little neglected since his debut 2 years ago, but with the new Black Stallion and book set and now this, things are starting to look up!

Oh boy, I really like this one. He definitely resembles his name, while I'm over here thinking if his legs were a little darker, he'd definitely have a "Fire and Blood" theme going on. But anyway...I did order one, even though those toothpick front legs still bother me a little. The Marchador mold, also sculpted by Sarah Mink, had the same issue and I ended up getting rid of him, so hopefully it doesn't become too much of an issue with these models, or they'll end up on the liquidation list too.

A couple of odd new Breyer models popped up on eBay today - they can be seen here and here. What are they? The black one is like a simplified Marabella, but I don't recognize the other one. Maybe Breyer is starting a lower-quality toy line with more durable models, like Schleich or CollectA? I guess we'll probably get more information eventually.

Featured Model - 10/9/2021, Glossy Gypsy Vanner

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...the Glossy Gypsy Vanner!

This handsome guy was one of the prize models at Breyerfest Live in 2013. He was a run of I think 50 (though IDYB doesn't have that listed for some reason). He's item #1497G and was issued on the Brishen/Gypsy Vanner mold sculpted by Kathleen Moody.

Brishen and his Andalusian alter ego have had a pretty popular run in the years since they first debuted. Brishen, especially, has had a new release almost every year, so he must be popular with somebody! His most recent release was this year's Halloween Horse Thriller, with Obsidian the Unicorn Stallion debuting at the start of this year. He's a popular guy! Sadly, I don't have a glossy Gypsy Vanner in my collection - sometimes I think back to when they could be had for $400 or less and kick myself for not buying then, because they're way more expensive than that now (if you can even find one for sale). Oh well - maybe someday I'll find one, or the prices will go down - or both!

Brishen is pretty popular, so it's hard to say where we'll see him next - though I note he still hasn't appeared as the Breyerfest surprise model like I thought he would have by now. I imagine next year's Breyerfest will have a lot of drafters with its Gemany theme...so, let's just say ol' Brishen is a front-runner for surprise model right now. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

What a tweest!

More exciting news today, readers - we finally get to see the final Stablemates Club release of the year! If you're a member of this year's club, check your email for more. And say hello to Twist!

His name seems kinda low-effort- I'd at least have named him Twister. Oh well, I don't make the rules.

He's definitely a beauty! I can't wait to purchase mine. He's apparently still on track to ship in December, and evidently we'll be able to order the bonus foal set with him (which is good, because I want those as well). It just kind of hurts that they're twisting (heh) the knife with today's reminder about the Stablemate drafter foal, after just revealing yesterday that the new mare and foal set for this year are NOT drafters. Maybe next year, eh?

Thursday, October 7, 2021

The news is coming fast and furious!

More exciting news today, everyone - firstly, there's going to be a Breyerfest second-chance sale for All-Access ticket holders after all! Huzzah!

According to the email, the remaining SR horse are the 7 Arts Surprise, Gran Cavallo, Peche Merle and Tassili. But quantities are limited, so if you want to buy any of these models, you'll have to enter a lottery to have your name drawn. I'm hoping to buy another 7 Arts Surprise model just for the heck of it, so hopefully I get drawn to buy one. Especially since my VIP second chance Ansel came today and was the regular blue roan one...bleh. Good luck to everyone!

Secondly, and possibly more excitingly, this year's third Premier Club release has finally been revealed! Say hello to Firefly and Hawkeye, sculpted by Morgen Kilbourne:

I wanted to like them, but...as I've said before, I'm not really into stock horses...

I like the foal more than the mare, but not enough to want to split up the set. For reasons I don't want to get into here, I need to be looking for excuses to keep the herd from growing, if not outright shrinking it, so these guys are going to have to move onto another home.

I guess I was really hoping this set would be a draft mare and foal instead, so the poor Clydesdale Foal could finally have a playmate after 52 years (going on 53 now, since we're not getting one this year). But, it's good that I don't feel the need to add these to my collection - my wallet will thank me.

Lastly, the same email that announced this pair said Astrid is going to be available to ship shortly! I can't wait to see mine! I ordered a glossy one, so I'm sure I'll be on the hunt for a matte one eventually. Let's see her, Breyer!

Dahlia!

Well, at least some things aren't delayed! Behold - the 2021 Stablemates Club gambler's choice model, Dahlia, is available to purchase!

Not sure why the image is so tall...but anyways. If you're a SMC member, check your club home page to purchase. Those are the four colors we can expect to receive! I have to admit I'm partial to the blue one. But I'm not a Croi collector, even in Stablemate form, so this one will be heading down the road. I hope everyone gets the color(s) they want!

2022 Vintage Club!

More good news, everyone - the 2022 Vintage Club is now open for enrollment (if you're a member of this year's club, that is)!

Ooh, an Appaloosa Performance Horse! I can't remember if I've predicted him to be part of the VC yet or not. Which reminds me...I haven't done a predictions post for next year yet. But anyway...

Cooper and his little tack set there are referred to as a throwback to an old Brenda Breyer release, according to the renewal email. Let's hope they put some plastic in between the horses and the bareback pads, eh? Wouldn't want any red stains on the models. And it looks like Cooper is basecoated, too. I wonder if they'll advertise him as chalky?

In other interesting news, the size of the club memberships has been increased to 750 - not really a surprise with how fast the club has been selling out in the last few years. Especially since they kept anyone from having more than two memberships this year. Seems like an increase in club members was inevitable - after all, we all know Breyer doesn't like to leave money on the table.

Not only that, but evidently there's a Smoky in this year's VC logo. Seems like a fitting addition to the club. There won't even be that much left for me to predict now - guess I should have written that post a little sooner, huh? Oh well. Let's hope the club takes a while to fill up, so we can see the rest of the releases ahead of time, eh? It's not very likely that I'll need to join, but you never know...we could get, like, another Adios, and a mold I collect for the modern-sculpt-with-vintage-paintjob release, and then they could pick a Stablemate I collect too and at that point I might as well just join. Throw in an alabaster Thoroughbred Mare/Nursing Foal and it's a deal! Though that isn't very likely, I'll admit. Anyway, I hope we get to see the rest of the releases soon!

There's also a surprise relating to the 10th anniversary of the club, according to the email. Hmm, I hope that means the 2022 Premier Club will have a surprise too! Er, wait...well, I hope it's a surprise we all get, rather than a micro-run or something...But anyway.

If you're already a member of this year's VC, you only have 6 days to renew your membership, so don't forget about it! Who knows how fast the additional memberships will sell out this year.

A wild Halloween shipment appears!

Good news, everyone! My Halloween order arrived today. Behold - it's EEK!

I've seen a lot of reports of these models with broken or damaged legs, but fortunately this guy survived his trip to my doorstep.

I like his subtle green sheen, and the intricate little spiders in his pattern. I've seen a lot of complaints about the spiders too, but fortunately they're all pretty nice on this one.

He does have an oddly warped left hind leg, but I can deal with that.

Next, the single Spooky Stablemate I ordered arrive as well...so check it out!

That's right, the drafter...just the one I thought I'd get. Fortunately, it's the only one I wanted, so I'm happy with it. He does look like a pumpkin patch under the night sky, though it looks like someone went a little overboard with the glitter.

I thought about ordering that Thriller hoodie, but if I had, I suspect I'd still be waiting for my order to ship, so it's probably best I didn't order it.

Lastly, here's Thriller himself! In the interest of full disclosure, he did arrive a few days ago, but I thought it was fitting that all my Halloween models arrived around the same time despite massive disparities between when they were ordered.

His green tint is much more apparent than EEK's, which I like. I'm also a fan of his Bride of Frankenstein hair!

I like the details in his bones underneath the skin, too. Appropriately ghoulish for this time of year!

That's all I have for now - let's hope we have more exciting news and reveals soon!

Featured Model - 10/2/2021, 2008 Roan Auction Bluegrass Bandit

Hello and welcome to another edition of Featured Model, the weekly blog event where I pick a model I don't own but would like to, give some stats on it and provide commentary about it. This week's model is...the 2008 Breyerfest Live Auction Strawberry Roan Bluegrass Bandit! Whew, that was kind of a mouthful.

This pretty girl was a OOAK offered at the 2008 Breyerfest Live Auction, as stated above. She was released on the Bluegrass Bandit mold sculpted by Kathleen Moody and Sommer Prosser. According to IDYB, her original sale price was...$1,000. That price makes me wince. Okay, all of the auction model prices from that year make me wince, honestly. If only they were still that price now...oh well. For what it's worth, that $1,000 for this model would be $1,200 now when accounting for inflation. So... there's that, anyway.

ANYway...Bluegrass Bandit certainly looks nice in strawberry roan! She's like a precursor to the I'm Yours release from 2012, but slightly darker from the looks of it. Actually, she almost looks more like a bay roan with those dark points. Either way, I definitely wouldn't mind having her in my collection! Kinda wish we had an in-hand photo of her, as the one from IDYB looks like one of Breyer's promo photos - she's a little washed out.

As for Bluegrass Bandit, I think it's high time we had a new release on her - the last one (not counting auction models) was Stella in 2019, and that was a TSC release, so we could do with something more widely available. Maybe a new RR? Or a brick and mortar release? Perish the thought...but we definitely need some kind of new BGB! Make it happen, Breyer! I mean...as soon as the shipping issues get straightened out, I mean.
